Loyola Shines at NYCAL Cross Country Championship

Yesterday’s NYCAL Cross-Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park offered a host of compelling storylines, and Loyola figured prominently in nearly all of them.  In the boys’ 3.1-mile race, Loyola finished third in the team standing.  Ben Schumann was the top overall runner, claiming first place with a gutsy kick in a scintillatingly close finish.  Schumann was supported by teammates Travers Silverman (eighth place), Ikki Kaijima (12th place), and Ryan Hogan.  In the girls’ 3.1-mile race, Loyola’s harriers were luminous, finishing first in the team standing and returning the championship trophy to Loyola after a two-year absence!  Hannah Cavanaugh-Gouvea ran a brilliant race to finish first overall.  Cavanaugh-Gouvea was followed by Ashley Jiang (fourth place), Sophia Daniels (eighth place), Maggie Tween, and Elise Williams.  The harriers conclude their season on Sunday, at the NYSAIS championships at Van Cortlandt Park.
