Christian Service Program

“Today our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others…men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce.”

Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

Loyola School’s Christian Service program assumes that serving the poor and improving the world is a critical part of a student’s development into a man or woman for others.  Rather than simply encouraging Loyola students to go out and help others, the School offer an integrated program that highlights the need to act and to reflect on the experience of serving others.  The Christian Service program includes a required reflection class for all four years as well as an active service requirement for all four years; there are also optional service trips, one in New York City, others to Camden, NJ, Appalachia, and Belize, Central America.  The ultimate intent of this effort is to address the needs of the disadvantaged and marginalized with a thoughtful and practical educational program designed to nurture a habit of service which begins during a Loyola student’s high school years and continues throughout her or his adult life.

Loyola School is honored and proud to name this program in memory of Wellington T. Mara of the class of 1933.  Wellington was a true “man for others” who throughout his life was committed to service and spreading God’s love.  As a Loyola alumnus, Gannon Award recipient, generous benefactor, devout Catholic, and outstanding leader, Wellington represented all of what Loyola School strives to accomplish in teaching students to be open to growth, committed to doing justice, religious, loving,  and dedicated to academic excellence.
