Voices of Loyola

Nina ’18

Previous School: Secaucus Middle School

Hometown: Secaucus, NJ

In-School Activities: Loyola Players: Drama Club, Choir, Current Events Club, Maroon and Gold: Student Ambassadors
Favorite Class: Biology and English

Describe Loyola in One Word: Loving

Hobbies: I love to sing and have jam sessions with my friends.

Fun Fact: I moved to America when I was 6. I can also speak Tagalog, which is the native language of the Philippines.

Siblings: Jules Almazar, who graduated Loyola in June 2016

Why Loyola? I chose Loyola because of the atmosphere and the size of the school. Coming from a school where the regular class size was 200, I really liked the idea of a small community. During my shadow day, I could feel how closely knit everyone was and I fell in love with Loyola instantly.

Favorite Loyola Memory: My favorite memory at Loyola would have to be sports night. After winning the most intense nail-biting game ever, everyone in the armory rushed onto the court. To me, it signified how comfortable we were with each other and how the Loyola family truly support and lift each other up.

Best Time of Year at Loyola: The best time of year at Loyola is Christmas time. It's that time of year where we can step back from work and just enjoy each other's company.

Favorite Loyola Teacher: My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. Howell because he has such an enthusiasm and passion for teaching. I enjoyed being in his class because he made math interesting and made sure no student was left behind. And did I mention he makes the best banana bread in the world!

Favorite Loyola “Grad at Grad” Characteristic: "Open to growth" because you never know what you could discover about yourself without being open. It personally has helped me grow as a person and continues to because it teaches me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.

Loyola Activity You've Always Wanted to Participate In: I've always wanted to try sports out for a change. I played basketball and ran on the track team in middle school, but I haven't had the chance to try out because the sports seasons conflict with play season.

Previous school: The Chapel School, Bronxville
Hometown: Westchester, NY
Favorite Class: Chemistry
In-School Activities: Basketball team, Golf team, Maroon & Gold, Stock Market Club
Hobbies: Sneaker selling

Fun Fact: I am a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan

Why Loyola? I was confident that Loyola's small, close-knit community would suit me best, and allow me to develop strong bonds with other students and teachers. Being from Westchester, I also hoped for a change of scenery, so commuting to the Upper East Side everyday was perfect.

Favorite Memory at Loyola: So far, my favorite Loyola memory has been the intense schoolwide dodgeball tournaments. It was awesome seeing the everyone gather in the gym to either compete for first or cheer on others from the bleachers. I am definitely pumped for this year's tournaments!

Favorite Event at Loyola: My favorite event at Loyola is Sports Night without a doubt. Cheering on the Varsity Knights from the student section is an unforgettable experience, as the gym practically rumbles from the relentless shouting and chanting.

Favorite Teacher at Loyola: My favorite teachers are Mr. Howell and Mr. Joseph. Mr. Howell because of the effort and care he always puts into making sure we fully understand new topics. Mr. Joseph because of the excitement and passion he brings to the classroom, as well as his jokes and funny references to pop culture.

Best time of the year at Loyola: In my opinion, Spirit Week is the best time of the year because of the various dress-down themes, and the school atmosphere is very hype in anticipation for Sports Night.

Favorite Loyola Grad at Grad characteristic: "Loving." I feel that Loyola continues to embody this characteristic in countless ways, from taking a fan bus to support the Knights teams, to eating lunch with unfamiliar faces in the Commons.

Favorite Class: English, Spanish, Morality
In-School Activities: Plays, Choir, A Capella, DAIS, The Blazer, Maroon and Gold, JV Volleyball, Ignatian Carbon Challenge Team, Ignatian Philanthropic Council

Fun Fact: I'm a vegetarian!

Why Loyola? From the moment I walked through the door, I was comfortable. While touring the school, the faculty and students were so welcoming. I knew it would become my second home.

Favorite Memory at Loyola: Standing on the stairs and applauding the seniors on their last day. It was one of those moments at Loyola where I truly felt at home. It was so incredible to see how genuinely happy everyone was for the seniors.

Favorite Event at Loyola: Sports Night is my favorite event because it is a time when the entire school comes together to support one another.

Favorite Teacher at Loyola: Ms. Gilfillan is my favorite teacher because she is the type of person that is serious when it is the time to be serious, but is also the type of person that you can have a laugh with.

Best time of the year at Loyola: Christmas at Loyola! I love the fact that we all exchange gifts. It's one of the advantages of being in a small school. The door decorating competition is also something that is extremely fun.

Favorite Loyola Grad at Grad characteristic: "Open to Growth" because at Loyola, there is an environment set up in which everyone wants you to do your best. There is always someone to catch you if you fall, which is why everyone feels so comfortable to try something new. I also think that this characteristic is extremely important to have in life, even outside of school.
