The Great Ignatian Challenge is Back!
For the fifth year, Loyola joins nine Jesuit high schools from four states – New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania – in a holiday food drive competition intended to inspire students to fight hunger by working to fill local food banks, pantries, and community centers with much-needed provisions. This friendly but spirited competition runs through Wednesday, November 25. Last year, the schools participating in The Great Ignatian Challenge collected and distributed over 137,632 pounds of food; Loyola set a high bar and met its goals by collecting over 15,500 lbs of food, or 68.67 lbs per student.
Fordham Prep alumnus Jim Rowen will once again personally pledge funds, $250,000 this year, to support the schools’ efforts with tiered awards based on specific criteria including the most amount of food collected per student. Mr. Rowen has asked that awards earned by the schools be used to offset the increase in expenses related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Once again, Loyola has designated City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization, as the recipient of our donations. To maintain Covid safety, we will be conducting our Food Drive ONLINE ONLY using this link https://amplify.ampyourgood.com/user/campaigns/3467.
Hunger in America has skyrocketed during this pandemic and we invite you to help support Loyola’s efforts and donate to this very important cause.
ABOUT THE GREAT IGNATIAN CHALLENGE
In 2016, a Jesuit school alumnus and donor, inspired by the Jesuit mission of being “women and men for others,” conceived the Great Ignatian Challenge by pledging thousands of dollars to support four participating schools in their holiday food drives. The Great Ignatian Challenge was created to highlight the collective service power and generosity among the participating NYC metro-area Jesuit high schools.
Since then the number of participating schools has grown to nine and 218 tons of food has been collected and distributed across local area food banks, community center, and aid organizations.
This year the participating schools are Canisius High School (Buffalo); McQuaid Jesuit (Rochester); Fairfield College Preparatory School (Fairfield); Fordham Preparatory School (The Bronx); Regis High School (Manhattan); Loyola School (Manhattan); Xavier High School (Manhattan); St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City); and St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia).
